Notes from Mar.10, 2010 ACCU Meeting ===================================== n.b. ACCU = Advisory Committee of CERN Users Indico agenda with slides (and eventually minutes): http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=76583 Actions & matters arising ------- - A CERN public/private partnership is under investigation. Possible hotel near Globe for visitors - Check Greybook that all institutes and data listed are correct - ACCU minutes will be distributed electronically from now on CERN Management, R.Heurer --------------- LHC: Discovery potential from 1/fb at 7 TeV sent out Also mentioned that he wants to see combined limits from the expts. Running time in total should be increased with latest schedule Upgrades: Planning extends up to 2030 Design studies for PS2/SPL considered done, to be pulled out if and when necessary SPS is a bottleneck on peak current, priority given to that Inner triplet upgrade. Phase 1 - Niobium/titanium magnets (means longer magnet, change inner regions), then Phase 2 - niobium/tin (stronger field). But looking into combining phases. Current news: 7 TeV collisions still planned for this month Currently plagued by Murphy's Law - small problems Important to get new QPS system active Fixed target program was successful last year Last week - fire in a CLIC klystron area, contained in module Scientific and geographic enlargement of CERN: Green paper in preparation to go forward on a global project Governance - Other geographic reps added to current CERN governance, or CERN as a major European partner in an outside larger geographic governance Scientific enlargement paper also planned. Another "white" paper on geographic enlargement of CERN membership, aim for green paper by June. Media Event: Will announce collisions a week beforehand, but not giving a specific date but a slot of dates Why organized? Because media will do it anyway. Report from GS Department, M.Tiirakari --------------------------------------- New structure of site engineering and management group: - Developing strategic plan - e.g. on preparing buildings - preventive maintenance, improve energy efficiency CERN shuttles: - time tables shown for circuits - propose change for departure to airport from noon to 12.30 Hostels: - B38 - change kitchens - B39 - renovate showers and kitchens Virtual store: - For hostel users, planning to offer a virtual store via the Novae restaurants. - Would be able to order online. - Aim to start by summer. Hostel Web bookings - Testing of Fidelio booking software done during Jan and Feb (60 booking requests) - Average 120 bookings per day would imply 24 failures per day, 4 for wrong person using this software - So web booking Fidelio software is not acceptable for CERN environment - GS department therefore plans to pursue CERN solution, ready Spring 2010 Hertz car rentals through CERN: - info on who to contact and what company code to use was presented Mobility-like car sharing - Will try via Hertz - 20 cars for a 6 month test period planned Diplomatic privileges: - Being transferred from HR to GS Dept - Green plates still take 8 weeks to process Rest.1 extension - construction permit approved by Geneva authorities - work should complete by October 2010 Safety ------ - Users reminded to sign-up/take appropriate safety courses on SIR (http://sir.cern.ch) Restaurant committee ---------------- - Vending machines has been under management of Novae. Plan to move some machines with low profits. - Rest.1 served largest volume ever last year - A small contaminiation discovered on a food rack, dealt with professionally, did not affect users - Rest.2 under new management - Rest.3 refurbished, but customers are at all-time low. But Rest.3 food quality reported to be poor. Code of Conduct, K.Lassi-Perini --------------- - Gathered user input Oct09-Jan10 - Maintain a workplace of mutual respect and understanding - Based on 5 values: integrity, committment, professionalism, effectivenes, diversity - Draft document in preparation - In easy language, not overly legal terminology - Will include examples - Will have FAQ online - Next steps: - March/April: discussion with enlarged directorate - May: presentation at TREF - June: Presentation to Council - Member countries requested to CERN management to have such a code CERN Facilities --------------- - www booking delayed (see above) - under consideration: reduced price for Bat.41 rooms? - almost no bookings refused for weekend (Fri, Sat, Sun) - Week-days, especially June-Aug, can have high refusal rate - Still some rooms can be empty during these periods due to last minute cancellation (same day). ==> Are Users willing to accept over-booking to improve occupancy? - Request to monitor refusals for info on whether it makes sense to add another hostel extension - The increase in the number of CERN users has outpaced the hostel increase of Bat.41 - CERN management considering off-site accommodation for summer students to ease load on hostels for users IT Service Review Meeting ------------------------- - new security regulations for web sites - billing of local calls from fixed lines will be further considered since some lines are shared - New tools for account and service management in preparation Users Office NEws ---------------- - If a User changes institute they MUST inform the Users Office and complete a new registration form immediately (recent incident with French authorities) - If a user who is resident in the area moves then they must inform CERN of their new address (host documents must be returned, e.g. if moving from Switzerland to France) - e-mail warnings are sent 28 days before the end of a USER/UPAS contract - EDH allows renewal when not at CERN - All Attestation de Fonctions must be replaced by a Carte de Legitimation by end of Aug-2010 (some details on CL and families listed in slides) - Users with AF/CL must also see the Users Office to get a French Card if they do not have one. - New Website: http://cern.ch/ph-dep-UsersOffice/ ==> Any feedback from users on this? AOB --- Fitness facility at CERN? "Pump Room" (Bat.216) at CERN used by fitness clubs and other clubs, but cannot be turned into gym with fixed equipment. Designated a multi-purpose room, including a conference room ==> User feedback: needs of a fitness facility for short-term use ? Next ACCU Meeting is June 9.
